Icebreaker's Sustainability Rating

Acceptable

  • Raw Materials

Icebreaker uses a majority of low emissions and certified materials, primarily RWS wool, organic cotton, and Tencel lyocell. It has plans to reduce its reliance on its remaining high emissions materials, and is working to be 100% plastic-free. It has reported on progress towards these goals within the last year. Its parent company, VF Corp, has plans to improve its materials mix, but it's unclear what extends to this brand.

  • Energy Use & Production

Icebreaker's parent company, VF Corp, utilizes renewable energy in a minority of its production and offices. It has plans to expand renewable energy to 100% across owned-or-leased facilities by 2026, but appears to be off track. Icebreaker sources and manufactures its materials globally, which is standard practice in the fashion industry.

  • Packaging & Distribution

Icebreaker uses some eco-friendly materials in its packaging, including 100% recycled plastic bags and FSC-certified paper products. Icebreaker is working to reduce its shipping emissions to customers. In 2024, 80% of its shipments travelled by sea, with less than 5% requiring air freight. Through careful forecasting and logistics management, it maintains sea and truck transport as its standard methods. Its parent company, VF Corp, is working to reduce its shipping emissions by incorporating biofuels into its ocean shipping.

  • Repair & Care

Icebreaker offers free repair options, including shared repair guides. Icebreaker offers a 1 year warranty. It gives basic care instructions that can help extend product lifespan.

  • Take Back Programs

Icebreaker doesn't offer a take back program to help keep its products out of landfill.

  • Slow Fashion

Icebreaker offers some products across multiple seasons but also releases new items seasonally each year.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Icebreaker has a prominent sustainability page with comprehensive details on its climate strategy. Its parent company, VF Corp, has a detailed annual report, with a clear, impact driven strategy and progress reporting. The latest annual report Commons studied is from 2025.

  • Emissions Tracking

Icebreaker's parent company, VF Corp, internally measures its overall emissions and reports them on an organization-wide level, with auditing from a third party. It includes a breakdown by scope and identifies its top driver of emissions. The last reporting period was 2025. In its most recent update, its estimated emissions footprint was 5,263,510 tons CO2e.

  • Targets & Offsets

Icebreaker's parent company, VF Corp, has medium and long-term SBTi-approved emissions reductions targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3. In its last progress report it was on track for some of its targets.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Icebreaker publishes information about its Tier 1-3 supply chain partners through its parent company VF Corp. VF Corp has a supplier code of conduct, which includes provisions for banning forced and child labor, requiring regular audits of partners, restricting subcontracting, and allowing collective bargaining. Its code of conduct doesn't address paying living wages.

Icebreaker has worked to improve its materials and emissions, but still has room to grow in other areas.

Icebreaker uses a majority of lower emissions and/or certified materials in its products, including linen, organic cotton, Tencel Lyocell, and RWS certified wool. It also has plans to reduce its use of high emissions materials and improve its materials footprint. It helps take responsibility for the full lifecycle of its products by offering repair guides and a 1 year warranty, but it doesn't offer any circular solution to further avoid landill waste.

Its parent company reports using a minority of renewable energy, and has SBTi-approved emissions reduction targets that are partially on track. It provides thorough reporting on its supply chain and material traceability.

We hope to see more transparency on this brand's packaging materials, and more progress on its renewable energy use and emissions reduction actions.
