Michael Kors' Sustainability Rating

Acceptable

  • Raw Materials

Commons couldn't find information on the overall proportion of materials this brand uses. We assume larger brands are still dependent on high emissions materials. Michael Kors uses both lower emissions materials such as recycled cotton, recycled polyester, as well as high emissions materials including conventional cotton, and nylon. Commons couldn't find any stated plans to increase low emissions materials and/or decrease synthetic materials. Michael Kors doesn't report having any product or company-level certifications.

  • Energy Use & Production

Michael Kors' parent company, Capri Holdings Ltd, shares information on its energy strategy. As of FY25, it uses 100% renewable energy to power its production sites, corporate offices and storefronts. Capri Holdings Ltd has general targets for maintaining and expanding its use of renewable energy. It implements energy efficiency measures in its corporate offices and storefronts. Michael Kors sources and manufactures its materials globally, which is standard practice in the textile industry.

  • Packaging & Distribution

Michael Kors has made efforts to reduce virgin plastic in its packaging and relies primarily on recycled plastic. Its parent company uses eco-friendly materials in its packaging, including ones that are FSC-certified, but it's unclear if this brands utilizes them. It doesn't appear to have made efforts to minimize the amount of material used in its packaging.

  • Repair & Care

Michael Kors offers free under warranty repair options for certain products like handbags and small leather goods. Michael Kors offers a 90 day warranty for shoes and apparel.

  • Take Back Programs

Michael Kors has a take back program called Michael Kors Pre-Loved. This program accepts the brand's own shoes and accessories for resale. Michael Kors doesn't share details on the efficacy of this program. We expect larger brands to share this information.

  • Slow Fashion

Michael Kors offers some products across multiple seasons but also releases new items seasonally each year. It's working to limit overproduction by decreasing internal samples with 3D printing, and it helps take responsibility for its cuttings waste by partnering with FABSCRAP for textile donations.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Michael Kors has a buried sustainability page which redirects to the parent company's page with high-level details on its climate strategy. Its parent company, Capri Holdings Ltd, publishes a detailed annual report with a clear, impact-driven strategy and progress reporting. Its last annual report was published in 2025.

  • Emissions Tracking

Michael Kors' parent company internally measures and publicly reports its company-level emissions in partnership with, or with auditing from, a third party. It includes a breakdown by scope and identifies its top driver of emissions. The last reporting period was 2024. In its most recent update, its estimated emissions footprint was 901,890 tons CO2e.

  • Targets & Offsets

Michael Kors' parent company, Capri Holdings Ltd, has SBTi-approved emissions reduction targets for the long-term (10+ years). It reported on its progress within the past year - it had achieved its scope 1+2 target early, but didn't provide clear progress reporting on its scope 3 target. However, it has recently reset its measurement strategy and targets after changes to its portfolio. We hope to see it report progress on its new targets soon. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Michael Kors' parent company, Capri Holdings Ltd, publishes information about its supply chain partners, disclosing their names and locations across Tier 1 (final production manufacturing). It publicly shares a supplier code of conduct, which prohibits forced labor, prohibits child labor, ensures the right to collective bargaining, establishes grievance mechanisms, includes environmental clauses, and disallows unauthorized subcontracting. Its code of conduct doesn't ensure a living wage. Capri Holdings Ltd has a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners, which can mitigate human and environmental risks.

Michael Kors' most impactful sustainability progress is at the overall parent company level, though it has some brand-level circularity and waste reduction initiatives.

Michael Kors uses a mix of high and low emissions materials, but doesn't share any goals for improving its materials mix by reducing synthetics or increasing certified natural or recycled materials. It helps take responsibility for the full lifecycle of its products by offering repair services and up to a 1 year warranty on some products. It has a take back program for resale, but doesn't report on its efficacy.

Its parent company reports using 100% renewable energy across all operations as of FY25. It has SBTi-approved emissions reduction targets. It reported on its reduction progress within the past year - it had achieved its scope 1+2 target early, but didn't provide clear progress reporting on its scope 3 target. However, it has recently reset its measurement strategy and targets after changes to its portfolio. We hope to see it report progress on its new targets soon.
