Guess' Sustainability Rating:

Fair

Guess helps keeps garments out of landfill by offering a takeback program. It also publicly reports on its emissions impact and has SBTi-approved emissions reduction targets.

However, the brand is a fast fashion brand that is still reliant on high emissions, fossil-fuel based synthetic materials.

  • Raw Materials

Guess is uses majority high emissions synthetic materials in its garmetns. Twenty eight percent of Guess's items are made with lower impact fibers, including recycled cotton and GOTS-certified organic cotton. It has plans to reduce its reliance on high impact fibers with short and medium term goals and has reported on progress towards these goals within the last year.

  • Energy Use & Production

Guess uses 28% renewable energy for its owned and operated facilities. Guess sources and manufactures its materials globally, which is standard practice in the fashion industry.

  • Packaging & Distribution

Guess has made some efforts to reduce the amount of virgin plastic in its packaging, including using recycled plastic and FSC-certified materials.

  • Repair & Care

Guess does not offer repair services or a warranty. Commons could not find care instructions for this brand.

  • Take Back Programs

Guess has take back partnerships that accepts this brand's clothing for donation, recycling, upcycling, or resale. It reports on the impact of these programs.

  • Slow Fashion

Guess is a fast fashion brand which continually overproduces products, incentivizes overconsumption, and creates excess waste.

  • Marketing

Commons is still analyzing this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Guess has a sustainability page with information about materials, energy use, current initiatives, and circularity, but makes it hard to find on its website. Larger brands have a greater responsibility to make this information clearly available due to its outsized impact. It is unclear how often this page or information is kept up to date. Guess also has a detailed annual report, with a clear, impact driven strategy and progress reporting. Its latest annual report is from 2023.

  • Emissions Tracking

Guess internally measures its overall emissions. It reports emissions on an organization level, but is currently only reporting Category 1 for Scope 3. Guess identifies its top driver of emissions, by including breakdowns.

  • Emissions Targets

Guess has SBTi-approved short-term emission reduction targets. It has shared progress on these in the last year and is on track for some of them. Commons could not find stated use of offsets. Larger brands have an outsized impact and responsibility to reduce their emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Guess publishes information about its Tier 1 and key TIer 2 supply chain partners. It has a supplier code of conduct, which includes provisions allowing collective bargaining.
