Timberland's Sustainability Rating

Fair

  • Raw Materials

Commons couldn't find information on the overall proportion of materials this brand uses. We assume larger brands are still dependent on high emissions materials. Timberland uses both lower emissions materials such as recycled cotton, recycled polyester, TENCEL Lyocell, organic cotton, and recycled rubber, as well as high emissions materials including conventional cotton, polyester, and nylon. Timberland makes its shoes with more responsibly sourced materials, including ethically harvested natural rubber and LWG-certified leather. Its parent company, VF Corp, has plans to improve its materials mix, but it's unclear what extends to this brand. Timberland doesn't report having any product or company-level certifications.

  • Energy Use & Production

Timberland's parent company, VF Corp, utilizes renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in an unknown portion of its production. It has plans to expand renewable energy to 100% across owned-or-leased facilities by 2026. Timberland sources and manufactures its materials globally, which is standard practice in the fashion industry.

  • Packaging & Distribution

It uses eco-friendly materials in its packaging, including ones that are FSC-certified. It has made efforts to minimize the amount of material used in its packaging. Its parent company, VF Corp, is working to reduce its shipping emissions by incorporating biofuels into its ocean shipping.

  • Repair & Care

Timberland doesn't offer repair services or support. Timberland offers a 1 year warranty. It gives basic care instructions that can help extend product lifespan.

  • Take Back Programs

Timberland has a take back program called Timberloop™ Take back Program. This program accepts the brand's own clothes, shoes for recycling. Timberland doesn't share details on the efficacy of this program. We expect larger brands to share this information.

  • Slow Fashion

Timberland offers some products across multiple seasons but also releases new items seasonally each year.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Timberland has a sustainability page with high-level details on its climate strategy, but this page is hard to find on its website. Its parent company, VF Corp, has a detailed annual report, with a clear, impact driven strategy and progress reporting. Its latest annual report is from 2024.

  • Emissions Tracking

Timberland's parent company, VF Corp, internally measures its overall emissions and reports them on an organization-wide level, with auditing from a third party. It includes a breakdown by scope and identifies its top driver of emissions. The last reporting period was 2024. In its most recent update, its estimated emissions footprint was 5,263,510 tons CO2e.

  • Targets & Offsets

Timberland's parent company, VF Corp, has medium and long-term SBTi-approved emissions reductions targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3. In its last progress report it was on track for some of its targets.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Timberland publishes information about its Tier 1-3 supply chain partners through its parent company VF Corp. VF Corp has a supplier code of conduct, which includes provisions for banning forced and child labor, requiring regular audits of partners, restricting subcontracting, and allowing collective bargaining. Its code of conduct doesn't address paying living wages.

Timberland is rated Fair because it has started to improve its products and production process, but still has room to grow.

Timberland uses a mix of high-emissions and certified materials. It helps take responsibility for the full lifecycle of its products by offering 1 year warranty and a take back program for recycling. It is working to reduce plastic in its packaging.

Its parent company reports using a minority of renewable energy strategy, and has SBTi approved emissions reduction targets that are partially on track. It provides thorough reporting on its supply chain and material traceability.

Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (harmful) to 5 (best). How we rate →
