Sephora's progress through its parent company's emissions and energy efforts is outweighed by its promotion of overconsumption and reliance on wasteful materials.

Though Sephora promotes many environmentally mindful options, it encourages overconsumption, which contributes to excessive landfill waste and energy use, and has widespread impacts on the environment. It doesn't share enough information on its own-brand supply chain, and has only limited goals for improving sourcing for its own-brand products.

Sephora appears to use primarily plastic packaging of a virgin or undisclosed source, which contributes greatly to waste production and excess energy use. However, it does have targets and initiatives to improve its packaging materials and reduce its packaging intensity, and it reports on progress towards its goals. Sephora also has initiatives to reduce waste in its corporate operations and it provides thorough reporting on its success rate.

Sephora's parent company, LVMH, publicly shares its emissions measurements and has SBTi-approved reduction targets that are partially on track. However, its scope 3 target reporting is somewhat misleading, and we hope for more transaparency and accountability. LVMH reports on its renewable energy strategy. It uses a majority (>50%) of renewable energy in its supply chain, offices, and stores, but it's unclear what proportion is used for Sephora specifically.
