  • Ingredients

    Ecover has committed to avoid certain ingredients to lower its environmental impact, including parabens, uncertified palm oil or palm oil-derived ingredients, and microplastics. While it has some ingredient commitments, it still uses a few ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including other petrochemical-based ingredients. Its products incorporate bio-based and/or biodegradable ingredients. It carries products that have certifications from Leaping Bunny, and Ecocert.


  • Containers & Packaging

    Ecover has made efforts to reduce virgin plastic in its product containers. It uses environmentally-mindful materials in its product containers, including ones that are recyclable, recycled, or bioplastics. It has made efforts to minimize the amount of material used in some of its product containers, including by specific efforts to avoid excessive materials for its dishwasher tablets. It doesn't provide reporting on its shipping materials.


  • Energy & Water Use

    Ecover's parent company SC Johnson shares information on its energy strategy. It uses some renewable energy to power its production sites and corporate offices. SC Johnson has targets for expanding its use of renewable energy. to 48% by 2025 It implements energy efficiency measures in its production sites and corporate offices. Ecover provides some information on its water conservation strategies. It has a global production span, which is standard for the industry.


  • Refill & Reuse

    By offering an online and in-store refillery model, Ecover reduces the need for takeback programs and lowers its waste footprint. It doesn't offer any take back programs for its product containers. It offers bulk sizes for some products, which may help reduce packaging waste. It provides recycling and/or disposal guidance for most of its products. It helps minimize the end of life impact of its products by choosing many packaging materials that are: monomaterial curbside recyclable.


  • Slow Consumption

    It's unclear if this brand releases new items seasonally or otherwise frequently, which can create excess waste. It takes measures to avoid overproduction or overconsumption, including by waste aversion initiatives at facilities.

  • Transparency & Reporting

    Ecover has a prominent sustainability page with high-level details on its climate strategy. Its parent company publishes a detailed annual report with a clear, impact-driven strategy and progress reporting. Its last annual report was published in 2024. Ecover shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products, on a per product basis.


  • Emissions Tracking

    Ecover's parent company, SC Johnson, measures its emissions on an organization-wide level but doesn't transparently report its data to the public. Its annual reports leave out scope 3, and Commons could only find scope 1 and 2 represented proportionally in charts, without quantifiable CO2e values to analyze.


  • Targets & Offsets

    SC Johnson, Ecover's parent company, has an emissions reduction target for 2025 with 2000 as its baseline year. However, its targets do not address scope 3, which is the largest portion of its emissions footprint. It recently reported that it had achieved its target, but its calculations and progress reporting are hard to track. It doesn't share any future goals for further scope 1 and 2 reductions, or goals to address its scope 3 emissions. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.


  • Supply Chain & Labor

    Ecover's parent company SC Johnson publishes some information about its supply chain partners, but doesn't provide details on geography or traceability. It publicly shares a supplier code of conduct, which prohibits forced labor, prohibits child labor. Its code of conduct doesn't disallow unauthorized subcontracting, the right to collective bargaining, a living wage, or establish any grievance mechanisms. It does not include any environmental clauses as well. Ecover or its parent company don't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks. Commons couldn't find further information about this brand's supply chain and labor practices.


  • Advocacy

    Ecover's parent company, SC Johnson, doesn't openly disclose its climate-obstructive trade association memberships. It's a member of 1 large climate-obstructive trade associations: Personal Care Products Council. It isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It donated to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024. Commons is working on better defining the amount donated.

Ecover is rated Fair because it has started to improve its products and packaging, but still has room to grow.

Its parent company, SC Johnson, reports on its renewable energy strategy and progress, but its emissions reporting and reduction efforts are lacking for such a large company. SC Johnson is holding back government climate action through its money and influence.
