  • Raw Materials

Commons couldn't find information on the overall proportion of materials this brand uses. Rip Curl uses both lower emissions materials such as recycled cotton, responsible rubber, LWG leather, and organic cotton, as well as high emissions materials including conventional cotton, neoprene, polyamide, and elastane. It has plans to reduce its reliance on high emissions materials, which include 100% responsibly sourced cotton by 2026 and transitioning to responsibly sourced plant-based neoprene alternatives. It has reported progress towards these goals within the last year. Rip Curl is a member of the Better Cotton Initiative and is a B Corp.

  • Energy Use & Production

Rip Curl shares information on its energy strategy. It uses some renewable energy to power its production sites. Its parent company, KMD Brands Limited, also uses some renewable energy in its production sites, corporate offices and stores, but doesn't disclose the percentages. It has general targets for expanding its use of renewable energy. KMD Brands Limited also implements some energy efficiency measures in its production sites, corporate offices and storefronts. Rip Curl sources and manufactures its materials globally, which is standard practice in the textile industry.

  • Packaging & Distribution

Rip Curl doesn't provide detailed information on its packaging materials. We assume it still relies on a portion of virgin petro-based plastic. It does share efforts to reduce plastic and packaging volume overall.

  • Repair & Care

Rip Curl offers paid repair options, including send-in for repair. Rip Curl offers a 1 year warranty. It gives basic care instructions that can help extend product lifespan.

  • Slow Fashion

Rip Curl offers some products across multiple seasons but also releases new items seasonally each year. It limits overproduction and waste via reusing waste/deadstock.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Rip Curl has a prominent sustainability page with comprehensive details on its climate strategy. Its parent company, KMD Brands Limited, publishes a detailed annual report with a clear, impact-driven strategy and progress reporting. Its last annual report was published in 2025.

  • Emissions Tracking

Rip Curl's parent company internally measures and publicly reports its company-level emissions in partnership with, or with auditing from, a third party. It includes a breakdown by scope. The last reporting period was 2025. In its most recent update, its estimated emissions footprint was 182,256 tons CO2e.

  • Targets & Offsets

Rip Curl's parent company has SBTi-approved emissions reduction targets for the short-term (1-5 years). It has reported on its progress within the past year, and is on track for some of its targets. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Rip Curl and its parent company, KMD Brands International, publish information about their supply chain partners, disclosing their names and locations across Tier 1 (final production manufacturing) and select Tier 2 (materials and packaging sourcing). KMD Brands International publicly shares a supplier code of conduct, which prohibits forced labor, prohibits child labor, includes environmental clauses, disallows unauthorized subcontracting, ensures the right to collective bargaining, ensures a living wage. Its code of conduct doesn't establish grievance mechanisms. Commons couldn't find a stated policy from this brand for regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks.

Rip Curl uses a mix of high and low emissions materials, and shares plans for reducing its use of synthetics and increasing its use of biobased and certified materials. Its parent company, KMD Brands Limited, reports on its supply chain and labor practices, renewable energy strategy, and emissions measurement and reduction efforts. It has SBTi-approved emissions reduction targets that are partially on track. We hope to see this brand share more information about its packaging materials in the future.
