Wild's Sustainability Rating:

Best

[Beta Review] Wild is a sustainability leader in its industry. It intentionally minimizes resource use and environmentally harmful ingredients while also innovating on industry standards.

Wild utilizes packaging minimization strategies and alternative models, such as reusable containers for all products, to reduce its waste and emissions footprint. It has reduced plastic in its packaging, and uses primarily recyclable, compostable, or recycled materials. Wild measures both its product-level and company-level emissions. It has committed to avoiding many ingredients that pose a threat to the climate, including parabens, phthalates, and uncertified palm oil.

This review was completed before Wild was acquired by Unilever, and is based on Wild's reporting as an independent company.

  • Ingredients

Wild has made ingredient commitments to lower its environmental impact, including by avoiding parabens, phthalates, and uncertified palm oil. While it has made commitments, it may still use some petrochemical-based ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate. It can be very difficult to eliminate these entirely, especially for small brands with limited resources. Its products incorporate bio-based and/or biodegradable ingredients. Wild is B Corp certified.

  • Containers & Packaging

Wild has made efforts to minimize the amount of material used in all of its product containers by redesigning containers to avoid excessive materials. It uses eco-friendly materials in its product containers, including ones that are recyclable or compostable, and its shipping packaging includes materials that are recycled. Wild has also made efforts to minimize the volume of material used in its secondary or tertiary shipping packaging.

  • Energy & Water Use

Wild shares brief information on its energy strategy. It has started to incorporate renewable energy to power some of its production sites, but doesn't share targets for expanding its use of renewable energy. Wild has a regional production span, which helps reduce transit emissions in its supply chain. It implements water conservation measures at select facilities

  • Refill & Reuse

Wild utilizes alternative models to avert waste for all products, including promoting reuse and offering reusable containers. It doesn't currently offer any take back programs for its product containers.

  • Slow Cleaning

Wild offers seasonal products or frequent releases, which can encourage overconsumption and production of excess inventory. It takes some measures to avoid this overproduction or overconsumption, including by minimizing wasted product.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Wild has a sustainability page with high-level details on its climate strategy, but this page is hard to find on its website. It publishes a detailed annual report with a clear, impact-driven strategy and progress reporting. Its last annual report was published in 2023. Wild shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products.

  • Emissions Tracking

Wild internally measures and publicly reports both its product-level and company-level emissions, and includes a breakdown by scope. The last reporting period was 2023 and in this update its estimated emissions footprint was 16094 tons CO2e.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for this brand. Wild offsets emissions from its supply chain sourcing activities.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Wild publishes limited information about its supply chain partners, disclosing their geographic locations. It doesn't publicly share a supplier code of conduct but states that it is working on increasing traceability. Wild doesn't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks.

  • Advocacy

Commons wasn't able to find evidence of any trade association memberships or any relevant policy for Wild. It's not a member of any key advocacy organizations that are blocking climate policy, but it also isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It doesn't employ any state lobbyists and didn't donate more than $100k to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024. This information was retrieved before Wild was acquired by Unilever.
