The Honest Company's Sustainability Rating:

Poor

[Beta Review] The Honest Company has a Poor rating for its personal care products due to an overall lack of sustainability efforts and disclosures. We expect more reporting and transparency from a brand of its size. While it avoids select ingredients, it still uses some in its personal care products that pose a significant threat to the climate, including uncertified palm oil and some petrochemical-based ingredients. It uses primarily plastic packaging of a virgin or undisclosed source, which contributes greatly to waste production and excess energy use. The Honest Company is lacking up-to-date reporting on its energy strategy, water efficiency measures, emissions measurement, emissions reduction targets, and any offsets.

We have not yet rated The Honest Company's diapers, makeup, or wipes.

  • Ingredients

The Honest Company has made ingredient commitments to lower its environmental impact, including by avoiding parabens, phthalates, other petrochemical-based ingredients. While it has made commitments, it appears to still use some ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including uncertified palm oil, other petrochemical-based ingredients. Its products incorporate organic ingredients. It carries products that have certifications from PETA Animal Test-free, EWG Verified, National Eczema Foundation Accepted, other certs, USDA Certified Biobased Product, EPA Safer Choice, NSF ANSI 305.

  • Containers & Packaging

The Honest Company previously published efforts to minimize the amount of material used in its product containers, but hasn't provided any updates since 2021. It has made efforts to minimize the volume of material used in its secondary or tertiary shipping packaging by reusing shipping gaylords. It uses eco-friendly materials in its packaging, including ones that are FSC-certified, recyclable, or recycled.

  • Energy & Water Use

The Honest Company doesn't share information on its energy strategy. The Honest Company has a global production span, which is standard for the industry. The Honest Company doesn't provide information on any water conservation strategies.

  • Refill & Reuse

The Honest Company utilizes alternative models for some products to avert waste, including redesigning products to be home-compostable, and providing recycling guidance for product containers. It doesn't offer any take back programs for its product containers. It offers bulk sizes for a few products, which may help reduce packaging waste.

  • Slow Cleaning

It's unclear if this brand releases new items seasonally or otherwise frequently, which can create excess waste.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

The Honest Company has a sustainability page with high-level details on its climate strategy, but this page is hard to find on its website and doesn't clearly link to its more thorough corporate site. It hasn't released an updated annual sustainability report since 2021. The Honest Company shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products, on a per product basis.

  • Emissions Tracking

The Honest Company previously internally measured and publicly reported its company-level emissions for scopes 1 and 2, but hasn't provided an update since 2021.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for this brand. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

The Honest Company doesn't publish information about its supply chain partners. It publicly shares a supplier code of conduct, which prohibits forced labor, prohibits child labor, and includes environmental clauses. Its code of conduct doesn't disallow unauthorized subcontracting, ensure the right to collective bargaining where not allowed by law, ensure a living wage, or establish grievance mechanisms. The Honest Company doesn't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks.

  • Advocacy

Commons wasn't able to find evidence of any trade association memberships or any relevant policy for this brand. The Honest Company isn't a member of any key advocacy organizations that are blocking climate policy, but it also isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It doesn't employ any state lobbyists, and didn't donate more than $100k to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024.
