We avoid 7-Eleven because its sustainability reporting is incomplete or nonexistent. Large brands have outsized influence on their industries. When they neglect to act it undermines broader sustainability progress.

Most of 7-Eleven's sustainability initiatives appear to be within its parent company's Japanese operations - it's unclear what extends to North American operations. Since it uses a franchise model, comprehensive reporting is more difficult, and there's likely more variation in sourcing and materials.

7-Eleven does not have any commitments to stock brands that meet environmentally-mindful criteria. It uses primarily plastic packaging of a virgin or undisclosed source, which contributes greatly to waste production and excess energy use. Its parent company has initiatives to improve its packaging materials, but it's unclear if this applies to North American operations.

7-Eleven publicly shares its emissions measurements and has a non-science-aligned reduction target limited to its scope 1+2 North American operations. Though this target is unusually limited, it is on track. It uses some (<50%) renewable energy in its North American stores, but doesn't share targets for expanding this.

7-Eleven has initiatives to reduce waste in its corporate operations and food waste in its supply chain, but the majority of reported activity is within Japanese operations. Its reporting could be improved for both.
