Activist Skincare's Sustainability Rating:

Good

[Beta Review] Activist Skincare has a Good rating because it intentionally minimizes resource use and environmentally harmful ingredients.

Activist Skincare successfully avoids many ingredients that pose a threat to the climate, including parabens, phthalates, harmful sun care ingredients, and other petrochemical-based ingredients. This is a difficult achievement for a small brand with limited resources. It utilizes packaging minimization strategies and alternative models to reduce its waste and emissions footprint, such as promoting reuse and offering reusable containers, and offering a takeback recycling program. Activist Skincare has made efforts to reduce its packaging plastic use and waste and uses 100% plastic-free packaging for its secondary shipping materials. Activist Skincare doesn't currently report on its energy strategy or emissions measurement, though it notes it's going through Carbon Neutral certification.

  • Ingredients

Activist Skincare has made ingredient commitments to lower its environmental impact, including by avoiding parabens, phthalates, harmful sun care ingredients, and many other petrochemical-based ingredients. It has succeeded in its commitments, and Commons didn't find evidence of these ingredients or other climate-threatening ingredients such as PFAs or microplastics in its products. This is a difficult accomplishment for small brands with limited resources. Activist Skincare's products incorporate bio-based and/or biodegradable and organic ingredients. It carries products that have certifications from Leaping Bunny, and it's a member of 1% For The Planet.

  • Containers & Packaging

Activist Skincare has made efforts to minimize the amount of material used in some of its product containers, including by offering refills in lightweight pouches. Its secondary or tertiary shipping packaging is 100% plastic-free, and its product containers contain recyclable materials.

  • Energy & Water Use

Activist Skincare doesn't share information on its energy strategy. Activist Skincare has a regional production span, which helps reduce transit emissions in its supply chain. Activist Skincare doesn't provide information on any water conservation strategies.

  • Refill & Reuse

Activist Skincare utilizes alternative models for most products to avert waste, including promoting reuse and offering reusable containers, and offering a takeback program. Its takeback program is a partnership with Terracycle that allows customers to recycle their refill pouches, which aren't curbside recyclable.

  • Slow Cleaning

Activist Skincare offers an evergreen collection, which helps prevent production of excess inventory. It takes measures to avoid overproduction or overconsumption, including by minimizing wasted product.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Activist Skincare has a prominent sustainability page with comprehensive details on its climate strategy. It doesn't publish an annual sustainability report, which is not uncommon for small brands. Activist Skincare shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products, on a per product basis.

  • Emissions Tracking

Commons couldn't find information on this brand's emissions tracking.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for Activist Skincare or evidence that it offsets any emissions. It previously stated it was undergoing Carbon Neutral certification, but it hasn't provided an update.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Activist Skincare publishes limited information about its supply chain partners, disclosing they're in the Pacific Northwest. It doesn't publicly share a supplier code of conduct. Activist Skincare doesn't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks.

  • Advocacy

Commons wasn't able to find evidence of any trade association memberships or any relevant policy for this brand. Activist Skincare isn't a member of any key advocacy organizations that are blocking climate policy, but it also isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It doesn't employ any state lobbyists and didn't donate more than $100k to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024.
