Coola

Organic SPF skincare, cruelty free

Coola
Coola's Sustainability Rating

Poor

  • Ingredients

COOLA has committed to avoid certain ingredients to lower its environmental impact, including parabens, phthalates, microplastics, harmful suncare ingredients, and other petrochemical-based ingredients. While it has these ingredient commitments, it still uses many ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including microplastics, other petrochemical-based ingredients, uncertified palm oil-derived ingredients, harmful suncare ingredients, and uncertified mica. Its products incorporate some organic and bio-based ingredients. It carries products that have certifications from PETA Cruelty-free.

  • Containers & Packaging

COOLA uses environmentally-mindful materials in its product containers, including ones that are recyclable and FSC-certified, and its shipping packaging includes materials that are recyclable. It has made efforts to minimize the amount of material used in some of its product containers by avoiding excessive materials. It has also made efforts to minimize the volume of material used in its secondary or tertiary shipping packaging.

  • Energy & Water Use

COOLA's parent company SC Johnson shares information on its energy strategy. It uses some renewable energy to power its production sites and corporate offices. SC Johnson has targets for expanding its use of renewable energy. to 48% by 2025 It implements energy efficiency measures in its production sites and corporate offices, but doesn't provide information on any water conservation strategies. COOLA has a global production span, which is standard for the industry.

  • Refill & Reuse

Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offers any alternative models to lower its waste footprint, such as refills or takeback programs.

  • Slow Consumption

COOLA offers seasonal products or frequent releases, which can encourage overconsumption and production of excess inventory.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

COOLA has a sustainability blog post with high-level details on its climate strategy, but this page is hard to find on its website. Its parent company SC Johnson publishes a detailed annual report with a clear, impact-driven strategy and progress reporting. Its last annual report was published in 2024. COOLA shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products on every product page.

  • Emissions Tracking

COOLA's parent company, SC Johnson, measures its emissions on an organization-wide level but doesn't transparently report its data to the public. Its annual reports leave out scope 3, and Commons could only find scope 1 and 2 represented proportionally in charts, without quantifiable CO2e values to analyze.

  • Targets & Offsets

SC Johnson, COOLA's parent company, has an emissions reduction target for 2025 with 2000 as its baseline year. However, its targets do not address scope 3, which is the largest portion of its emissions footprint. It recently reported that it had achieved its target, but its calculations and progress reporting are hard to track. It doesn't share any future goals for further scope 1 and 2 reductions, or goals to address its scope 3 emissions. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

COOLA's parent company SC Johnson publishes some information about its supply chain partners, but doesn't provide details on geography or traceability. It publicly shares a supplier code of conduct, which prohibits forced labor, prohibits child labor. Its code of conduct doesn't disallow unauthorized subcontracting, the right to collective bargaining, a living wage, or establish any grievance mechanisms. It does not include any environmental clauses as well. COOLA or its parent company don't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks. Commons couldn't find further information about this brand's supply chain and labor practices.

  • Advocacy

COOLA's parent company, SC Johnson, doesn't openly disclose its climate-obstructive trade association memberships. It's a member of 1 large climate-obstructive trade associations: Personal Care Products Council. It isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It donated to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024. Commons is working on better defining the amount donated.

COOLA has a Poor rating due to an overall lack of sustainability efforts and disclosures. We expect more reporting and transparency from a brand of its size.

Commons found that this brand uses many ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including petrochemical-derived ingredients and microplastics. COOLA uses plastic packaging of a virgin or undisclosed source, which contributes to waste production and excess energy use. It has, however, made some efforts to minimize its product containers by avoiding excessive materials.

Its parent company, SC Johnson, reports on its renewable energy strategy and progress, but its emissions reporting and reduction efforts are lacking for such a large company. SC Johnson is holding back government climate action through its money and influence.
