ALDI provides detailed reporting and has made progress with its emissions and waste reduction strategies. However, it still has some areas to improve further within packaging and sourcing.

A large portion of the environmental impact of purchases made at retailers comes from upstream decisions on sourcing materials and ingredients. Retailers are responsible for these decisions for their whitelabel brands, but can also push change by highlighting sustainable options from other brands. Aldi doesn't share any stocking commitments or promote environmentally mindful product collections, but it does share some time-bound targets to improve sourcing for its whitelabel brands.

ALDI appears to use primarily plastic packaging of a virgin or undisclosed source, which contributes greatly to waste production and excess energy use. However, it has targets and initiatives to improve its packaging materials and reduce its packaging intensity. It also has initiatives to reduce waste in its corporate operations and reduce food waste in its supply chain and it provides detailed reporting on both.

ALDI reports using a majority of renewable energy in its supply chain, offices, and stores. It also has a detailed refrigerant management strategy and many of its stores are GreenChill certified. It publicly shares its emissions measurements and has SBTi-approved reduction targets that are partially on track.
