Where Nike has room to grow: Nike is still reliant high impact materials. It frequently releases new products, which can encourage overconsumption. The brand is not on track to meet all of its emission reduction targets.

  • Raw Materials

It plans to reduce its reliance on high impact fibers with a goal of 50% environmentally preferred materials by 2025, and it has reported on progress towards this goal within the last year.

  • Energy Use & Production

Nike provides specific information about its renewable energy use. It reports using renewables at production sites and owned and operated facilities, and has plans to expand renewables in its production. It reports energy efficiency projects at owned and operated facilities but not at partners/suppliers. It incentivizes high impact express shipping with its membership system. It is working to reduce its shipment emissions to customers by decreasing air freight for online orders and expanding regional distribution options.

  • Take Back Programs

Nike has take back programs and partnerships that accept this brand's shoes for donation, recycling, or resale. It does not report on the impact of this program.

  • Slow Fashion

Nike offers a core evergreen collection, but also has frequent new releases and limited editions.

  • Marketing

Commons is still analyzing this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Nike has a sustainability page with high-level information about materials, emissions reduction, current initiatives and progress, and circularity. Nike also has a detailed annual report, with a clear, impact driven strategy and progress reporting. Its latest annual report is from 2023.

  • Emissions Tracking

Nike internally measures and publicly reports its overall emissions, including a breakdown by scope. In 2023 its estimated emissions footprint was 9,537,243 tCO2e.

  • Emissions Targets

NIke has emissions reduction targets for the near term. These targets are approved by SBTi, and the brand is on track for some targets and far behind on others. Nike offsets emissions for its Scope 2 impact.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Nike publishes the names and locations about most of its supply chain partners. It has a supplier code of conduct, which requires regular audits of partners and allows collective bargaining. It does not restrict subcontracting or require a living wage.
