Charlotte Tilbury

Charlotte Tilbury
Charlotte Tilbury's Sustainability Rating

Poor

  • Ingredients

Charlotte Tilbury doesn't make any ingredient commitments at the brand-level. Choice of ingredients is a strong determinant of environmental impact, and Charlotte Tilbury uses many ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including parabens, microplastics, harmful suncare ingredients, other petrochemical-based ingredients, and uncertified palm oil-derived ingredients. It carries products that have certifications from Leaping Bunny.

  • Containers & Packaging

Charlotte Tilbury shares almost nothing about its packaging at the brand-level. We hope for more transparency from large brands. It appears to rely primarily on virgin plastic packaging, which greatly increases its emissions and waste footprint. Charlotte Tilbury hasn't made any efforts to concentrate its products or minimize its containers, which increases shipping emissions and packaging volumes.

  • Energy & Water Use

Charlotte Tilbury's parent company, PUIG, shares information on its overall energy strategy. It uses some renewable energy to power its production sites and corporate offices, and has targets for expanding its use of renewable energy to 100% by 2030. It implements energy and water efficiency measures in its production. Charlotte Tilbury has a global production span, which is standard for the industry.

  • Refill & Reuse

Charlotte Tilbury offers refills, but puts them in packaging that is unidentified or otherwise difficult to dispose of, which adds to landfill waste. It doesn't offer any take back programs for its product containers. It offers bulk sizes for some products, which may help reduce packaging waste. It doesn't provide any guidance to help customers properly recycle or dispose of its products.

  • Slow Consumption

Charlotte Tilbury offers seasonal products or frequent releases, which can encourage overconsumption and production of excess inventory.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Charlotte Tilbury doesn't appear to have a sustainability page or centralized source of relevant information. It also doesn't link to its parent company's comprehensive resources. We expect more transparency from large brands. Its parent company, PUIG, publishes a detailed annual report with a clear, impact-driven strategy and progress reporting. Its last annual report was published in 2024. Charlotte Tilbury shares a complete list of ingredients for most of its products, but not all.

  • Emissions Tracking

PUIG, Charlotte Tilbury's parent company, internally measures and publicly reports its emissions It includes a breakdown by scope and identifies its top driver of emissions. The last reporting period was 2024. In its most recent update, its estimated emissions footprint was 565,710 tons CO2e.

  • Targets & Offsets

PUIG, Charlotte Tilbury's parent company, has SBTi-approved emissions reduction targets for the medium-term (5-10 years), long-term (10+ years). It has reported on its progress within the past year, and is on track for some of its targets. The brand offsets emissions from a portion of its footprint, and shares information on the projects it supports.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Charlotte Tilbury's parent company, PUIG, publishes information about its supply chain partners, disclosing the names and locations of its production plants. This is rare in the industry. It publicly shares a supplier code of conduct, which prohibits forced labor, prohibits child labor, ensures the right to collective bargaining, and establishes grievance mechanisms. Its code of conduct doesn't disallow unauthorized subcontracting, ensure a living wage, or include environmental clauses. PUIG doesn't have a stated policy of regular in-person auditing for its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks.

  • Advocacy

Commons wasn't able to find evidence of any trade association memberships or any relevant policy for this brand's parent company, PUIG. PUIG isn't a member of any key advocacy organizations that are blocking climate policy. It isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It doesn't employ any state lobbyists. It didn't donate more than $100k to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024.

Charlotte Tilbury is rated Poor because it is lacking sustainability efforts and disclosures, especially at the brand-level.

Charlotte Tilbury uses many ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including parabens, microplastics, harmful suncare ingredients, other petrochemical-based ingredients, and uncertified palm oil-derived ingredients. It provides no reporting on its packaging, and appears to rely on virgin plastic, which greatly increases its waste and energy use.

Its parent company has initiatives and reporting on many sustainability topics, including its renewable energy strategy, emissions reduction efforts and SBTi-approved targets, offsets, supply chain, and labor practices. Its unclear what initiatives apply to this brand, however.

Charlotte Tilbury was acquired by PUIG recently, but directive control doesn't begin until 2031.
