Solara Suncare

Skincare meets suncare, for sensitive skin

Solara Suncare
Solara Suncare's Sustainability Rating:

Poor

Solara Suncare's Poor rating is due to a lack of published sustainability information. It’s a smaller brand, which means it likely has fewer resources for robust sustainability efforts and reporting. When Solara Suncare publishes more data, we’ll be able to do a more thorough review.

While it avoids select ingredients, especially as it pertains to harmful sunscreen ingredients, it still uses some that pose a significant threat to the climate, including uncertified palm oil or palm oil-derived ingredients, microplastics, other petrochemical-based ingredients, and mica. Solara Suncare doesn't utilize any alternative models or packaging minimization strategies to reduce its waste and emissions footprint. It still relies on virgin petro plastic for its packaging, though it does use some eco-friendly materials in its packaging like FSC-certified recyclable paper cartons and aluminum cans.

Commons found Solara Suncare's products to be free of parabens, phthalates and PFAS. Almost all of its products are EWG-verified.

  • Ingredients

Solara Suncare has made ingredient commitments to lower its environmental impact, including by avoiding harmful suncare ingredients and aligning with the EWG standards. Solara Suncare does not make explicit commitments to eliminating parabens, phthalates and PFAS, but Commons did not find evidence of these harmful ingredients in its products. Solara Suncare appears to still use some ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including palm oil or palm oil-derived ingredients without a statement of verification, microplastics, other petrochemical-based, and mica without a statement of certification. It can be very difficult to eliminate these entirely, espcially for small brands with limited resources. It carries products that have certifications from EWG Verified and Leaping Bunny and its extract and oil blends are Ecocert + COSMOS approved. Solara Suncare is a partner of 1% For the Planet.

  • Containers & Packaging

Solara Suncare hasn't made any efforts to concentrate its products or minimize its containers, which increases shipping emissions and packaging volumes. It still uses virgin petro plastic, but also uses eco-friendly materials in some of its product containers, including recyclable biobased plastic bottles and FSC-certified mixed recyclable paper cartons.

  • Energy & Water Use

Solara Suncare doesn't share information on its energy strategy. Solara Suncare doesn't provide information on any water conservation strategies. Solara Suncare has an unknown production span.

  • Refill & Reuse

Solara Suncare doesn't utilize any alternative models or methods to avert waste and does not offer bulk sizes.

  • Slow Cleaning

Solara Suncare doesn't frequently release seasonal or limited edition products, which helps prevent production of excess inventory.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Solara Suncare doesn't appear to have a sustainability page or centralized source of relevant information aside from limited information on its About and FAQ pages. Like many small brands, it doesn't publish an annual sustainability report. Solara Suncare shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products on a per product basis.

  • Emissions Tracking

Commons couldn't find information on this brand's emissions tracking.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for this brand. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor
