Naturepedic's Sustainability Rating

Great

  • Raw Materials

Commons couldn't find information on the overall proportion of materials this brand uses for its bedding. For a small brand, we assume a mix of material types. Naturepedic uses both lower emissions materials such as organic cotton, organic wool, as well as high emissions materials including polyester and elastane. Naturepedic carries bedding materials with the following certifications: GOTS, Green America, Made Safe, Responsible Down Standard (RDS), Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), AAFA certified Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), FSC-certified textiles. Commons couldn't find any stated plans to increase low emissions materials and/or decrease synthetic materials.

  • Energy Use & Production

Naturepedic shares information on its energy strategy. It uses RECs to power 100% of its production sites and storefronts. It's unclear if it uses them for its offices. Naturepedic has targets for expanding its use of renewable energy. It implements energy efficiency measures in its production sites and corporate offices. Naturepedic sources and manufactures its materials globally, which is standard practice in the textile industry. Naturepedic is working to reduce the span of its operations by manufacturing all mattresses at its Ohio manufacturing facilities and sourcing materials domestically.

  • Packaging & Distribution

Naturepedic uses eco-friendly materials in its packaging, including ones that are recycled and FSC-certified. It still uses some virgin plastic packaging, and it's unclear if it relies on it.

  • Repair & Care

Naturepedic offers free under warranty repair options for the first 10 years of warranty. Naturepedic offers a 25 year warranty for its mattresses, but it's unclear if this extends to its bedding materials as well. It gives basic care instructions that can help extend product lifespan.

  • Take Back Programs

Naturepedic has a take back program called Mattress Disposal. This program accepts any brand's mattresses for recycling, which is often very difficult to find. However, the program does not accept any bedding materials (e.g. sheets) for recycling.

  • Slow Fashion

Naturepedic exclusively offers an evergreen collection, which helps prevent waste from production of excess inventory. It limits waste via reusing waste/deadstock and collecting offcut material for proper recycling.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Naturepedic has a prominent sustainability page with comprehensive details on its climate strategy. It publishes a detailed annual report with a clear, impact-driven strategy and progress reporting. Its last annual report was published in 2024.

  • Emissions Tracking

Commons couldn't find information on this brand's emissions tracking. This process can be an expensive undertaking for small brands.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for this brand. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Naturepedic publishes information about its supply chain partners, disclosing their geographic locations across Tier 1 (final production manufacturing). It doesn't publicly share a supplier code of conduct, but does disclose other policy which prohibits child labor. Naturepedic doesn't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks.

Naturepedic intentionally minimizes resource use and environmentally harmful materials while also offering a much-needed recycling solution.

Naturepedic appears to use primarily low emissions and certified materials, including GOTS cottons, RDS, GOLS latex, and Made Safe materials. It helps take responsibility for the full lifecycle of its products by offering repair services, a 25 year mattress warranty, and a takeback program for mattresses, which are difficult to properly dispose of.

It uses RECs to power 100% of its production and storefronts. We hope to see it share its emisssions measurements and reduction strategies in the future.

This rating is primarily based on Naturepedic's bedding materials - its mattress details have been considered, but the Commons Textile Rubric doesn't cover all material topics for mattresses.

Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (bad) to 5 (best). How we rate →
