Mixed Chicks

Frizz-free products for multi-cultural hair

Mixed Chicks
Mixed Chicks' Sustainability Rating:

Poor

Mixed Chicks's Poor rating is due to a lack of published sustainability information. It’s a smaller brand, which means it likely has fewer resources for robust sustainability efforts and reporting. When Mixed Chicks publishes more data, we’ll be able to do a more thorough review.

While it successfully avoids select ingredients, such as parabens and phthalates, it still uses some that pose a significant threat to the climate, including petrochemical-based ingredients and uncertified palm oil or palm oil-derived ingredients. It doesn't publish a full list of ingredients for all of its products, specifically its lipsticks and soaps. This is rare even though reporting isn't mandatory, since consumers need access to this information for safety and allergy determinations. Mixed Chicks doesn't utilize any alternative models or packaging minimization strategies to reduce its waste and emissions footprint, and appears to use primarily virgin plastic packaging.

  • Ingredients

Commons couldn't find any company level statements about Mixed Chick's ingredient commitments. The majority of Mixed Chick's products are paraben and phthalate free and they offer some that are sulfate free. Mixed Chicks uses some ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including some petrochemical-based ingredients and uncertified palm oil or palm oil-derived ingredients. It can be very difficult to eliminate these entirely, espeically for small brands with limited resources. Mixed Chicks carries products that have certifications from Leaping Bunny.

  • Containers & Packaging

Mixed Chicks hasn't made any efforts to concentrate its products or minimize its containers, which increases shipping emissions and packaging volumes. While many of their paper boxes are from pre and post-consumer recyled content, Mixed Chicks uses plastic containers, of unknown recycled content, for its product containers. Its shipping materials include ones that are recyclable and biodegradable.

  • Energy & Water Use

Mixed Chicks doesn't share information on its energy strategy. Mixed Chicks doesn't provide information on any water conservation strategies. Commons was unable to find information on Mixed Chicks' production span.

  • Refill & Reuse

Mixed Chicks doesn't utilize any alternative models or methods to avert waste.

  • Slow Cleaning

Mixed Chicks doesn't frequently release seasonal or new products, which helps prevent production of excess inventory.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Mixed Chicks doesn't appear to have a sustainability page, but provides a brief overview of conservation tactics on their Customer Service page. Like many small brands, they don't release an annual sustainability report. Mixed Chicks provides a full list of ingredients for many, but not all, of its products. We hope for more transparency from brands.

  • Emissions Tracking

Commons couldn't find information on Mixed Chick's emissions tracking.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for this brand. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Mixed Chicks doesn't publish information about its supply chain partners. It doesn't publicly share a supplier code of conduct. Mixed Chicks doesn't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks. Commons couldn't find further information about this brand's supply chain and labor practices.

  • Advocacy

Commons wasn't able to find evidence of any trade association memberships or any relevant policy for this brand. Mixed Chicks isn't a member of any key advocacy organizations that are blocking climate policy. It isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It doesn't employ any state lobbyists. Mixed Chicks didn't donate more than $100k to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024.
