Alaffia's Sustainability Rating:

Good

Alaffia has a Good rating because it intentionally chooses responsible ingredients and is improving its packaging.

Alaffia has committed to avoiding select ingredients that pose a threat to the climate, including parabens, phthalates, select other petrochemical-based ingredients, and irresponsibly sourced palm oil. It appears to succeed in these commitments, and Commons found very few climate-threatening ingredients in its products. Alaffia also uses Fairtrade and ECOCERT ingredients in its products. It has made efforts to reduce its packaging plastic use and waste, and uses primarily 100% PCR plastic for its product containers.

Though it's a small brand, we hope it introduces some lower-waste formats and packaging models, and reports more information in the future.

  • Ingredients

Alaffia has made ingredient commitments to lower its environmental impact, including by avoiding parabens, phthalates, select other petrochemical-based ingredients, and uncertified palm oil ingredients. It uses only a few ingredients that pose a significant threat to the climate, including phenoxyethanol, a petrochemically-derived ingredient. It can be very difficult to eliminate these entirely, especially for small brands with limited resources. Its products incorporate bio-based and/or biodegradable ingredients. It carries products that have certifications from Leaping Bunny and ECOCERT.

  • Containers & Packaging

Alaffia hasn't made any efforts to concentrate its products or minimize its containers, which increases shipping emissions and packaging volumes. However, it has made efforts to reduce virgin plastic in its product containers, and uses primarily 100% PCR plastic. It also uses some lower-content recycled plastic and some FSC-certified materials.

  • Energy & Water Use

Alaffia doesn't share information on its energy strategy. Alaffia doesn't provide information on any water conservation strategies. Alaffia has a global production span, which is standard for the industry.

  • Refill & Reuse

Alaffia doesn't utilize any alternative models or methods to avert waste. It offers bulk sizes for some products, which may help reduce packaging waste.

  • Slow Cleaning

Alaffia doesn't frequently release seasonal or new products, which helps prevent production of excess inventory. It takes measures to avoid overproduction or overconsumption, including by designing multipurpose products.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Alaffia has a sustainability page with details on its climate strategy, but this page is hard to find on its website. Alaffia shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products, overall and on a per product basis.

  • Emissions Tracking

Commons couldn't find information on this brand's emissions tracking.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for this brand. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Alaffia publishes limited information about its supply chain partners, disclosing the geographic locations of some TIer 2-3 suppliers. It doesn't publicly share a supplier code of conduct and doesn't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks. It has labor certifications within its supply chain, including Fairtrade, and it has used ECOCERT ingredients since 2008.

  • Advocacy

Commons wasn't able to find evidence of any trade association memberships or any relevant policy for this brand. It's not a member of any key advocacy organizations that are blocking climate policy. Alaffia isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It doesn't employ any state lobbyists. Alaffia didn't donate more than $100k to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024.
