Primally Pure's Sustainability Rating:

Fair

[Beta Review] Primally Pure is rated Fair because it has improved its ingredients and waste footprint, but still has room to grow in other areas.

Primally Pure doesn't appear to use almost any of the climate-threatening ingredients that Commons screens for, including parabens, phthalates, harmful sun care ingredients, and other petrochemical-based ingredients. This is difficult for many brands to achieve. It has made efforts to reduce its packaging waste by offering recycling guidelines and a takeback recycling partnership with Pact Collective. However, Primally Pure hasn't worked to minimize its packaging through concentrates or other methods, and it still uses plastic packaging with an unknown recycled content, which may contribute to waste production and excess energy use. Its a small company, with likely limited resources, but it doesn't provide information on its energy strategy, emissions, any reduction efforts, or its labor practices.

  • Ingredients

Primally Pure has a 'toxin-free' focus, but has only made one clear ingredient commitment to lower its environmental impact: avoiding uncertified palm oil or palm oil-derived ingredients. However, Commons didn't find evidence of many other climate-threatening ingredients in its products, including parabens, phthalates, microplastics, harmful suncare ingredients, PFAS or other petrochemical-based ingredients. This is good to see, and difficult for many brands to achieve. Primally Pure's products incorporate biobased, regenerative, and organic ingredients. Primally Pure doesn't report having any product or company-level certifications.

  • Containers & Packaging

Primally Pure hasn't made any efforts to concentrate its products or minimize its containers, which increases shipping emissions and packaging volumes. It appears to rely on plastics with an unknown recycled content but also uses eco-friendly materials in its product containers, including recyclable glass and aluminum.

  • Energy & Water Use

Primally Pure doesn't share information on its energy strategy. Primally Pure doesn't provide information on any water conservation strategies. Primally Pure has a global production span, which is standard for the industry.

  • Refill & Reuse

Primally Pure offers recycling guidelines and a takeback partnership with Pact Collective to help avert waste. Its takeback partnership allows customers to send in old containers for a discount on a future order. It offers bulk sizes for some products, which may help reduce packaging waste.

  • Slow Cleaning

Primally Pure doesn't frequently release seasonal or new products, which helps prevent production of excess inventory.

  • Marketing

Commons is still evaluating this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Primally Pure has a series of sustainability pages with high-level details on its climate strategy. Like many small brands, it doesn't release an annual report. Primally Pure shares a complete list of ingredients used in its products, on a per product basis.

  • Emissions Tracking

Commons couldn't find information on this brand's emissions tracking.

  • Targets & Offsets

Commons couldn't find emissions reduction targets for this brand. Commons couldn't find evidence that this brand offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Primally Pure publishes limited information about its supply chain partners, disclosing their geographic locations. It doesn't publicly share a supplier code of conduct. Primally Pure doesn't have a stated policy of regularly auditing its supply chain partners. This may increase human and environmental risks.

  • Advocacy

Commons wasn't able to find evidence of any trade association memberships or any relevant policy for this brand. Primally Pure isn't not a member of any key advocacy organizations that are blocking climate policy, but it also isn't a member of advocacy organizations advancing climate policy. It doesn't employ any state lobbyists and didn't donate more than $100k to climate-obstructive candidates or PACs from 2018-2024.
